God of the afflicted, comforter of those who mourn;
Take up the spirit of Brad Sevetson into your heart tonight, and grant him the joy of reconciliation with You, the Creator of All.
Grant Betsy and their children the knowledge of your boundless love, and comfort them in their hour of grief. Be their rock, to whom they can cling when all else seems lost. Grant them timely healing of this heart-wound, and clear memory of the blessing of Brad’s love for them and the wonder of the times they spent together.
In the name of your Son, our Savior, we ask this of you.

Oracle Database Administration

My Database Blog has a new entry about Oracle book resources at: http://psevetson.blogspot.com/
I've been selected to receive training in Oracle Database Administration, so I've updated my Database Blog (it was previously a DB2 Database Blog) to include useful stuff. I'm very happy about this -- I was thinking that I was going to have to leave my current employer to get this stuff.
It's a big help to my career. Basically, if I got laid off today, I'd be in the same position I was five years ago -- expert in a technology (DB2 mainframe database administration) that pays very well, if... (more)

Dark day. Deb just now got off the phone with her pain-management doctor and called me.

Because of the surgery not being indicated, because she's got numbness in her legs, because she has to have prescription narcotics in her system to blunt the pain she experiences (lower back) enough to function, her doctor says she should not be driving, and he will support her application for Social Security Disability.

Swearing isn't appropriate -- as she says, it beats having your obituary in the newspaper. But we're going to have to adjust our thinking from "this is an episode and it'll go away" to... (more)

We've changed cellphone numbers so that they're local numbers down here in NJ. This is more convenient for people who call us down here, which is almost all of our calls. Please contact me (using the link on this webpage) if you need my new number.

THE OSCAR MAYER WEINERMOBILE CONTEST???

So we're driving home from a round of mini-golf and hitting a bucket of balls on a local driving range, and as we stop at a drugstore for chips and soda, we see a giant vehicle shaped like a hot dog on a bun, with the Oscar Mayer logo on the side. It's the OSCAR MAYER WEINERMOBILE!!! of whose existence I was innocent until this moment. But, since I work for a grocery co-op, I figure maybe they'll have a cool magnet I can slap on the side of my desk at work.

No such luck... but do you remember the "Oscar Mayer Weenie Whistle" that the stepfather wished for in "The Santa Clause"? They've... (more)

Fun with XBox

I'm playing on the XBox -- spent about 1:15 on it last night with I. backseat-driving, and we loved it. HALO is the first game of choice. Good plot, good action, I'm playing it at minimal intensity to make up for my aged reflexes and lack of experience with game controllers.

Buddy Dawn B. says that she likes Outlaw Golf, and explained why. Apparently anything which is named "outlaw" is for adults only. So I won't be introducing anything in my house, since I. is only nine.

SOME GOOD XBOX TITLES FOR KIDS

Anything Crash Bandicoot
Anything Sonic the Hedgehog
Shrek
The Incredibles (Features hitting and shooting but no blood or gore, so older kids)
MX Unleashed (Motorcycle Racing in dirt)

More as I find them.

SOME BAD XBOX TITLES FOR KIDS
Almost anything martial-arts-y; they seem to have gone in for weapons and blood in every one I've checked.
Return to Castle Wolfenstein (of course)
Anything by Tom Clancy (of course)
GRAND THEFT AUTO. What are parents THINKING of, to let their kids anywhere near this thing?
Oddly, anything which calls itself any variation of "Extreme Volleyball". Either a... (more)
